The Rhine Meeting 2014 took place under the patronage of the European Parliament, represented by President Martin Schulz, and that of Archbishop Emeritus Cardinal Joachim Meisner.
The European Parliament
President Martin Schulz writes:
It is wonderful to have so many international notables come to Cologne in order to discuss European identity and the challenges currently facing European societies. Europe cherishes a common philosophical and cultural heritage. We share ideas and rules regarding the power of the people, the separation of powers, the freedom of the press, and human rights. The struggle for democracy and human rights has been a common theme throughout European history, from the Middle Ages to the direct election of the European Parliament, from the Bill of Rights in England to the EU Charta of Fundamental Rights, or from the French Revolution to Solidarność.
I am therefore more than glad to be able to assure you of the EU Parliament’s patronage of your event.
The Archbishop of Cologne
Archbishop Emeritus Cardinal Joachim Meisner writes:
I would like to thank you for your letter of 9 May 2013, in which you inform me about your plans to organise the first Rhine Meeting from 15-16 March, and I hereby confirm its receipt. I very much welcome this initiative and will gladly assume patronage for this undertaking.
